Our Valuation Services

At Goodwins, we provide professional valuation services for jewellery, silverware and watches, ensuring each item is carefully assessed by our experienced team. Whether you need a valuation for insurance purposes, probate, resale or simply for your own peace of mind, our experts are here to help.

  • Jewellery Valuations

Our specialists meticulously examine each piece of jewellery, assessing gemstones, precious metals, craftsmanship and overall condition to provide an accurate valuation.

  • Silverware Valuations

We evaluate silver items, including antiques and collectibles, considering factors such as age, rarity, hallmarkings and maker’s marks.

  • Watch Valuations

Our team has extensive knowledge of luxury and vintage watch brands. We assess the watch’s condition, model, age and market demand to determine its true value.

Valuation Fees

Valuations are charged on a per-item basis. An estimate will be provided upon inspection of the items requiring valuation. Below is an example of our valuation fees:

  • One-off document fee (applies to each report prepared)

    £100

  • Gem-set item (jewellery featuring gemstones)

    £85 per item

  • Non-gem-set item (jewellery without gemstones)

    £65 per item

  • Watch

    £85 per watch

  • Grouping of items under £500 (up to 10 items per group)

Please note: the above are examples. Final costs may vary depending on the complexity and number of items. A precise estimate will be provided after inspecting your items.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of valuation do you provide?

We provide valuations for insurance replacement, probate, family division, private sale and personal records. Each report is clearly marked with its purpose, as different valuation bases produce different figures for the same item.

How long does a valuation take?

Most written valuation reports are prepared within two to three weeks of inspection. Larger collections, complex stones or items requiring further research may take longer — we’ll confirm an expected delivery date when your items are checked in.

Do I need to make an appointment?

No appointment is necessary for an initial consultation. Simply drop by Queensferry Street or Rose Street with your items, and one of our valuers will assess what’s involved and provide a fee estimate.

How much do valuations cost?

Fees are charged per item and depend on the item type and complexity — a guide to typical fees is set out in the table above. A precise estimate is always provided after inspection and before any work begins.

Will my items be insured while in your care?

Yes. All items left with us for valuation are fully insured from the moment they are receipted at the counter to the moment they are collected.

Are your valuations accepted by insurers?

Yes. Our written valuation reports are accepted by all major UK insurance providers. Each report is signed by a qualified valuer and includes photographs, descriptions and an assessed replacement value.

How often should jewellery be re-valued?

Most insurers recommend an updated valuation every three to five years, as precious metal and gemstone prices fluctuate. Significant movements in the gold or diamond markets are a good prompt to check whether your cover is still adequate.

Can you value items you didn’t sell?

Yes — we welcome items from any source, including inherited pieces, auction purchases and items bought elsewhere. The valuation is based on the item itself, not where it was acquired.
