Antique Victorian 9ct Gold and Amethyst Floral Scroll Brooch, Circa 1860

£1,895

A beautiful antique 9ct gold and amethyst brooch, circa 1860, of richly decorative mid-Victorian design. The brooch is centred by a large, impressive oval-cut amethyst, displaying a deep violet-purple hue with flashes of lighter colour across its broad, faceted surface. It is flanked on either side by two smaller oval-cut amethysts, creating a balanced graduated arrangement and giving the jewel a particularly striking presence. The three amethysts are raised within ornate gold settings, allowing light to enter the stones and emphasising their rich colour and lively faceting. Surrounding the gemstones is an elaborate framework of scrolling and foliate goldwork, with delicately pierced and curling forms extending outwards from the central stones. At either side are stylised floral motifs, while the lower section is embellished with further scrolling openwork and a distinctive central flower-like element, lending the brooch a wonderfully intricate and sculptural appearance. The warm yellow gold contrasts beautifully with the cool violet tones of the amethysts, whilst the openwork construction gives the piece an airy, graceful quality despite its substantial decorative form. A fine gold safety chain and traditional brooch fitting are present to the reverse. An exceptionally attractive example of mid-Victorian jewellery, combining richly coloured amethysts with elaborate scrolling goldwork in the highly ornamental style characteristic of circa 1860.
