Description

This exceptional antique pendant necklace is crafted in fine gold and dates to circa 1875, exemplifying refined Victorian design and meticulous workmanship.

The necklace is suspended from a substantial gold chain composed of elongated, articulated links, giving it a strong yet fluid drape and a distinctive period character. The chain complements the pendant beautifully, balancing visual weight with elegant movement.

The pendant itself is formed as a geometric lozenge (diamond) shape, with softly chamfered edges and a smooth, satin-like gold finish that enhances its understated sophistication.

At the centre of the design sits a raised square plaque, set with five old cut diamonds arranged in a cross formation. The diamonds have a total approximate weight of 1.05 carats and display the characteristic charm of old cuts, with gentle brilliance and depth rather than sharp modern sparkle.

Each diamond is individually set within square gold collets, slightly elevated from the surface to allow light to enter from multiple angles, enhancing their natural fire.

The reverse of the pendant is equally considered, featuring a glazed circular locket-style panel, allowing a view into the interior.

This thoughtful detail is typical of the era and adds both sentiment and craftsmanship to the piece, offering space that would historically have held a miniature, lock of hair, or personal memento. The pendant is suspended from a robust, tapered bale that integrates seamlessly into the overall design, ensuring secure and graceful wear.

Elegant, architectural, and rich in historical character, this fine gold pendant necklace combines strong geometric form with delicate diamond detailing.

Its balanced proportions, antique diamonds, and beautifully finished front and reverse make it a rare and highly wearable example of late 19th-century jewellery, offering both visual presence and timeless appeal.
